The Columbus Blue Jackets were left stunned earlier this week after defenseman Zach Werenski reportedly blocked a potential trade to the Dallas Stars, halting what would have been one of the biggest moves of the NHL offseason.

According to multiple reports, Columbus and Dallas had reached the framework of a deal that would have sent Werenski to Texas in exchange for a package centred around defenseman Thomas Harley, along with additional pieces to balance cap structure and draft compensation. However, the deal ultimately fell apart when Werenski exercised his full no-movement clause.

Werenski, 28, remains under contract with Columbus at a $9.6 million average annual value and is signed through the 2027-28 season. While he has not formally requested a trade, league sources indicate he has been engaged in discussions with the Blue Jackets about his long-term future as Columbus continues to evaluate its roster direction.

NHL insider Pierre LeBrun described the situation as “fluid and far from over,” noting that Werenski’s preference is playing a significant role in narrowing potential landing spots.

"He hasn’t closed the door on Columbus, but he is clearly selective about where he would consider going,” the source said. “That changes everything when a player of his calibre is involved.”

With the offseason still unfolding, the Blue Jackets are expected to continue returning calls. However, any potential trade will now depend heavily on Werenski’s approval, narrowing the list of realistic landing spots significantly.

For now, the blockbuster move to Dallas is off, but the larger conversation surrounding Werenski’s future in Columbus is far from settled.
