Maple Leafs Re-Sign Troy Stecher to Two-Year Extension

The Toronto Maple Leafs have re-signed defenseman Troy Stecher to a two-year contract extension, keeping one of the team's most reliable depth defensemen in Toronto through the 2027-28 season. The deal carries an average annual value of $1.35 million.

Stecher became an unrestricted free agent following the 2025-26 season, but it did not take long for general manager John Chayka to bring the veteran blueliner back. Claimed off waivers from the Edmonton Oilers in November, Stecher quickly became a dependable piece of Toronto's blue line. He appeared in 58 games during the 2025-26 season, recording three goals and 11 assists for 14 points.

The BC native had a strong season with the Maple Leafs and played a critical role when they needed it most. Bringing Stecher into the mix in November will be remembered as one of the better moves former general manager Brad Treliving made. When the Maple Leafs claimed Stecher, they were struggling in all facets of their game, and while the struggles continued throughout the season, the 32-year-old brought new air into the Maple Leafs' locker room.

Stecher has appeared in more than 620 NHL games with the Vancouver Canucks, Detroit Red Wings, Los Angeles Kings, Arizona Coyotes, Calgary Flames, Edmonton Oilers, and Maple Leafs. While he has consistently bounced around the NHL, he has finally looked to find a home in Toronto.

As John Chayka continues to reshape the roster, bringing back Troy Stecher ensures the Maple Leafs retain a veteran presence who proved he could contribute after joining the club midway through last season.

While bigger moves are still expected this summer, keeping Stecher in Toronto provides the organization with another source of stability heading into the 2026-27 campaign.
