The New Jersey Devils have made one of the biggest moves of the NHL offseason, signing captain Nico Hischier to a five-year, $58.5 million contract extension that will keep the franchise cornerstone in New Jersey through the 2031-32 season.
The new contract carries an average annual value of $11.7 million and begins at the start of the 2027-28 campaign. The extension comes just one day after Hischier became eligible to sign a new deal and eliminates any uncertainty surrounding the future of the Devils' captain, who was entering the final season of his current seven-year contract.
Since being selected first overall in the 2017 NHL Draft, Hischier has developed into one of the league's premier two-way centers while establishing himself as the leader of the Devils both on and off the ice.
"Since the day he was drafted as the No. 1 overall pick in 2017, Nico Hischier has represented the New Jersey Devils with class, commitment, and a dedication to the community," Devils managing partner David Blitzer said. "He puts the team before himself and wants nothing more than to win here in New Jersey. The entire organization is extremely proud that Nico wears the 'C' for us, and we couldn't be happier that he's signed this contract extension."
Hischier has spent his entire NHL career with the Devils, totalling 199 goals and 488 points in 609 regular-season games while emerging as one of the NHL's most complete centers. His ability to contribute offensively while matching up against opposing top lines has made him one of the most valuable players in the organization.
