The Montreal Canadiens made one of the biggest signings on July 1st, and while it didn't come from anyone on the market, they signed young phenom Ivan Demidov to an eight-year $73.2 million deal, making sure he is locked up with the Canadiens ahead of the 2026-27 season.

The deal has an average annual value of $9.15 million and begins during the 2027-28 season, solidifying Demidov as one of the core pieces of Montreal’s long-term plans.

The extension comes as no surprise to those inside the organization, as Demidov has quickly become viewed as one of the most important young forwards within the Canadiens’ lineup. His skill level, vision, and offensive creativity have already made him a centrepiece of the franchise’s future outlook.

Canadiens general manager Kent Hughes emphasized that securing Demidov long-term was a priority as soon as he became eligible for a new contract.

"I think Ivan knows we have a certain salary structure with our team and, like our other players, he’s a team player,” said Hughes. “He’s someone who wants to be part of something instead of being the thing.”

Demidov’s deal places him among the highest-paid young forwards in the NHL as he just completed his first full season, a clear indication of how highly Montreal values his ceiling and development trajectory.
